Nothing Good Will Come of It

This weekend's Trifextra, the bonus challenge from Trifecta, was to finish in 33 words this beginning: "The phone rang at 4am." So here's my effort:

Her mind hid the sound in her restless sleep, making it part of the dream. Her heart knew what words awaited her, though, and the tears spilled from her eyes as they opened.

Oh, so sad...that your mind is so certain of bad news that it will deafen you to it.
Well done.
Came from the Trifextra linkup.

Felt that with you.

Oh the awareness of bad news waiting to present itself. The dread can be worse than the fact of the matter.

Thanks so much for linking up to Trifextra. Remember, this weekend’s entries are being judged by the Trifecta community, so make sure you visit the site at the close of the challenge to vote. Our linking service will not allow you to vote for a link from the same computer where it was submitted, so plan ahead! Voting closes 12 hours after the close of the challenge. Winners will be announced with the Monday post. Hope to see you back then.

I know this feeling - well captured. That desperate desire to stay asleep and not have to face a reality you want to ignore.

It isn't just the bad news that I find so touching here, it's the certainty of WHICH bad news it is, as evidenced by the tears. I know when I got news like that, each time it was a grandparent's death. Expected, but still heartwrenching. One at 6AM, and another at 7PM.

There was a third. My sister. But the sorrow had dryed up so long ago from that well that I didn't even think of it in conjunction with your piece at first.

Thanks, y'all. And yes, she knew with certainty what bad news it was. How she knew, since it had been coming so slowly for so long, I'll never understand.

Sometimes a heart just knows. This is beautiful.
