Vindication

I never said I LIKED it; I said I understood it better now. It's definitely not a GOOD book, but I do think it belongs in the canon because of the time/place/mindset it presents. Like a little written time capsule.

Oh, now don't backpedal Jennie. It's not a GOOD book. It's a GREAT book! But, really, of all the GREAT books you've read, how many did you actually like?

I loved Catch-22. Something about the voice of that book just kept me laughing throughout the whole thing. I can't think of any story aside from the Hitchhiker series that made me laugh so much.

Still, I get that it's not for everyone. My favorite book of all time is The Count of Monte Christo (the unabridged version), but I can't tell you how many times I've told people not to bother reading it. It's not for everyone.

Moby Dick is much the same, and I seem to remember Rodius having a thing about that - I still smile, picturing you wearing a Wool Coat, a Greek Fisherman's Cap and smoking a pipe.

Anyway, the point is that you don't have to like the book. I keep telling myself that I will read War and Peace someday. But I don't suspect that I will like it much.

I lurved The Count of Monte Cristo, but I only had the abridged version (gasp!). It was a little odd towards the middle when all these random new people started showing up!
